Interview Tips That Get Results: Practical Advice for Remote and In-Person Interviews

Preparing for an interview today means balancing confident storytelling, clean logistics, and smart follow-up. Whether you’re meeting in person or over video, these actionable strategies help you present clearly, answer behavioral questions with impact, and leave a memorable impression.

Before the interview: research and logistics
– Study the company’s mission, products, and recent news.

Focus on how your skills solve specific problems they’ve mentioned.
– Review the job description and identify the top three skills they require.

Prepare one concise example that demonstrates each skill.
– For virtual interviews, test your camera, microphone, internet connection, and lighting. Choose a neutral, uncluttered background and keep your device plugged in.
– For in-person interviews, plan your route and arrive 10–15 minutes early. Bring copies of your resume, a notebook, and a pen.

Answering behavioral questions: use the STAR scaffold
Behavioral questions are common because they reveal how you actually perform. Structure answers with:
– Situation: Briefly set the scene.
– Task: Explain the challenge or responsibility.
– Action: Describe what you did and why.
– Result: Share the outcome with measurable impact if possible.

Example: “Tell me about a time you handled a tight deadline.”
– Situation: “A client needed a campaign launched with two days’ notice.”
– Task: “I was responsible for copy, design coordination, and final QA.”
– Action: “I prioritized tasks, delegated design drafts, and held hourly check-ins to remove blockers.”
– Result: “We launched on time, received client approval, and saw a 20% engagement lift in the first week.”

Crafting your “Tell me about yourself”
Keep this concise and structured: present — past — future.
– Present: What you do now and a recent accomplishment.
– Past: Key experiences that led you here.
– Future: Why this role fits your next step.
Example: “I lead content strategy at a small agency, where I boosted organic traffic by optimizing long-form articles.

Earlier, I worked on product marketing which taught me to translate technical features into customer benefits. I’m excited about this role because it combines strategy and product storytelling at scale.”

Body language and voice
– Maintain eye contact (for video, look at the camera periodically).
– Sit upright, smile naturally, and use open hand gestures when appropriate.
– Pace your speech—pause briefly after key points to give the interviewer time to react.
– Mirror energy: match the interviewer’s tone and tempo while staying authentic.

Questions to ask the interviewer
Good questions show curiosity and judgment.

Consider:
– What does success look like in this role after six months?
– How does the team measure outcomes and prioritize work?
– What’s the most immediate challenge you’d like this person to solve?

Closing and follow-up
– End by briefly reiterating your fit and enthusiasm.
– Send a concise thank-you email within 24 hours. Reference one key point from the conversation and restate your interest.
– If an offer discussion comes, ask about total compensation and growth opportunities.
