How to Ace Interviews: STAR Stories, Remote Video Setup, and Salary Negotiation

October 16, 2025interview advice Standard

Nailing an interview is part preparation, part storytelling, and part presence. With more interviews happening remotely and recruiters screening candidates with tech-driven tools, being strategic about how you present skills and fit makes a big difference.

Here are practical, actionable tips that work across industries and formats.

Research with purpose
– Go beyond the company overview. Read recent news, product updates, leadership bios, and customer reviews to understand priorities and pain points.
– Map your experience to the role: list three ways your background solves problems the company is facing. These tailored points are what hiring managers remember.

Master the STAR framework for behavioral questions
– Structure answers using Situation, Task, Action, Result. That keeps responses concise and outcome-focused.
– Quantify impact whenever possible: “reduced churn by 15%,” “cut processing time in half,” or “delivered three projects under budget.”
– Prepare four to six STAR stories covering leadership, problem-solving, teamwork, conflict resolution, and a learning moment.

Polish your technical and role-specific skills
– For technical roles, practice coding or case problems under timed conditions and explain your thought process aloud.
– For client-facing or product roles, prepare a portfolio of work and be ready to walk through decisions, trade-offs, and measurable results.

Optimize video interviews
– Light your face evenly, use a neutral background, and position the camera at eye level to create a professional presence.
– Test your audio and internet connection in the same location you’ll use for the interview. Have a backup device or hotspot ready.
– Look at the camera when speaking to simulate eye contact, and keep body language open—lean slightly forward and avoid crossing arms.

Answer salary and compensation questions confidently
– Research market ranges for the role, factoring in location and company size. Provide a range rather than a single number, and tie compensation to responsibilities and impact.
– If asked early, redirect to learning more about role expectations and deliverables before discussing exact figures.

Ask strategic questions
– Ask about the team’s immediate priorities, success metrics for the role, and how decisions are made. These questions show business acumen and help you assess fit.
– Avoid asking questions that are easily found on the company website. Use the time to deepen the conversation.

Control nervousness and pacing
– Use a short prep ritual before the interview—breathing exercises, a quick review of your three tailored points, and a glass of water.
– Pause before answering to gather thoughts. Silence is okay and often indicates confidence.

Follow up strategically
– Send a concise thank-you message that references a specific part of the conversation and reiterates why you’re a fit.
– If you haven’t heard back within the timeframe discussed, send a polite status check that reiterates your continued interest.

Negotiate from value
– When an offer arrives, emphasize your impact and the value you’ll deliver.

Consider negotiating beyond salary—flexible hours, professional development, or a performance-based review can be equally valuable.

Acing interviews is about preparation and projection.

By tailoring your stories, practicing the format you’ll face, and demonstrating clear value, you move from answering questions to leading the conversation—and that’s what gets offers.
