Quick preparation checklist
– Research the company mission, products, culture, and recent news. Use the company website, employee reviews, LinkedIn, and relevant press.
– Match your resume to the job description. Highlight 3–5 accomplishments that directly map to core responsibilities.
– Prepare a concise personal pitch (30–60 seconds) that explains who you are, what you do, and why you’re a fit.
– Have examples ready that demonstrate impact: metrics, timelines, and outcomes make stories memorable.

Use the STAR structure for behavioral questions
Behavioral and competency questions dominate many interviews. Structure answers using Situation, Task, Action, Result (STAR):
– Situation: Briefly set the scene.
– Task: Describe the challenge or goal.
– Action: Explain what you specifically did.
– Result: Quantify the outcome and what you learned.

Keep answers focused and specific—avoid drifting into long-winded narratives.

Aim for 1–2 minutes per STAR story.

Nail the first impressions
– Start with a warm greeting and a smile. For video calls, make eye contact by looking at the camera, not the screen.
– Dress one step more professional than the everyday office standard.
– For phone interviews, stand up and smile; it changes your tone and energy.

Video interview best practices
– Test audio, camera, and internet speed before the call. Use headphones with a microphone if possible.
– Choose a clean, well-lit background and sit with natural light in front of you.
– Close unnecessary apps and mute notifications. Keep notes visible but out of direct sight to preserve eye contact.

Answering tricky questions
– When asked about weaknesses, frame one that’s genuine but not central to the role, and explain steps you’re taking to improve.
– If you lack direct experience for a required skill, share transferable experiences and a concrete plan to bridge the gap.
– For gaps in employment, be honest, emphasize what you learned, and highlight relevant activities during that time.

Ask thoughtful questions
Prepare 5–7 questions and prioritize the best ones. Examples:
– How would success be measured in this role?
– What are the biggest challenges the team faces right now?
– How does the company support professional growth?
Avoid questions focused solely on salary or benefits early in the process.

Negotiation and closing
Know your salary range based on market data and be ready to explain your value—specific accomplishments, relevant skills, and impact. If offered, ask for time to review the full compensation package and respond professionally with a counteroffer if needed.

Follow-up that stands out
Send a concise, personalized thank-you email within 24 hours. Reference a specific point from the conversation and reiterate enthusiasm for the role. If additional materials were discussed (portfolio, code sample, references), include them promptly.

Practice with purpose
Mock interviews, feedback from mentors, and recording practice sessions improve clarity and reduce nerves.

Focus on storytelling cadence, tightness of examples, and answering questions directly.

Preparation paired with thoughtful delivery changes outcomes. With targeted practice, clear examples, and professional follow-up, interviews become opportunities to showcase both competence and fit.
