Interview Best Practices: How to Prepare, Perform, and Follow Up

A great interview is part preparation, part presence. Whether you’re facing a phone screen, video call, or in-person meeting, reliable habits increase confidence and the chance of a strong outcome. These best practices cover practical preparation, interview-day performance, and smart follow-up tactics.

Preparation: research, stories, and logistics
– Research the company beyond the job posting. Read the company’s website, recent press releases, leadership bios, and Glassdoor or similar reviews to understand culture, priorities, and challenges. Tailor examples to align with their mission and products.

– Map your resume to the job. Identify two to four accomplishments that directly demonstrate the skills listed in the job description.

Quantify impact whenever possible (percent improvements, revenue, time saved).
– Practice behavioral stories using the STAR framework: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Keep responses concise and focused on your specific actions and measurable outcomes.
– Prepare for technical or case-style components. Practice whiteboarding, coding problems, or case interviews in timed settings to mimic pressure.
– Anticipate common questions: “Tell me about yourself,” “Describe a time you failed,” and “Why this company?” Draft outlines, not scripts, so answers remain natural.
– Plan logistics. Confirm the interview link, phone number, or address. Charge devices, place headphones ready, and choose a quiet, interruption-free environment for remote or in-person meetings.

Performance: presence, clarity, and questions
– Open with a strong elevator pitch: 30–60 seconds about your background, specialization, and what you’re looking for. Make it relevant to the role.
– Lead with impact. When answering technical or behavioral questions, start with the most important result or conclusion before diving into details—this respects the interviewer’s time and demonstrates clarity.
– Showcase collaboration and learning.

Employers value candidates who can communicate technical skills and work well with others. Highlight how you solicit feedback, resolve conflicts, and iterate on solutions.
– Use active listening. Pause briefly before responding to ensure you understood the question. If something isn’t clear, ask a concise clarifying question.
– Manage nonverbal cues.

Maintain eye contact (or camera gaze), sit upright, nod appropriately, and smile. For remote interviews, keep your camera at eye level and frame yourself from mid-torso up.
– Ask thoughtful questions. Move beyond benefits and hours—ask about team priorities, success metrics for the role, how decisions are made, and the next big challenge the team faces.

Follow-up: timing and content
– Send a brief thank-you note within 24 hours. Personalize it by referencing a specific topic discussed and reiterating how your skills solve a key pain point mentioned during the interview.
– If you promised materials (e.g., portfolio pieces or references), deliver them promptly and clearly label files for easy review.
– Reflect on what went well and what could improve. Keep a private log of questions and your responses to refine for future interviews.

Common pitfalls to avoid
– Overloading answers with irrelevant background. Keep answers job-focused.
– Bad logistics: testing tech last minute, poor lighting, or noisy environments.
– Treating the interview as only an assessment. It’s a two-way evaluation—use questions to determine fit.

Consistent application of these practices leads to better confidence and stronger impressions. Preparation, clarity, and professional follow-up turn performances into opportunities.
