Interview Best Practices: A Two-Way Guide for Candidates & Interviewers

September 6, 2025Interview best practices Standard

Interviews are a two-way evaluation: candidates assess culture and fit while hiring teams verify skills and potential. Focusing on structure, clarity, and respect makes the process fairer and more effective for everyone. Below are practical best practices for both candidates and interviewers.

Before the interview
– Research smartly: review the company site, recent product updates, and public-facing team content.

Scan Glassdoor-style resources for role expectations and typical interview formats.
– Map your stories: prepare 6–8 concise, varied examples that highlight impact, problem-solving, collaboration, leadership and learning. Use the STAR framework—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to keep answers crisp and results-focused.
– Prepare logistics: test your tech for virtual interviews, confirm location and directions for in-person meetings, and bring printed copies of your résumé or portfolio. Plan a quiet, well-lit space with a neutral background if interviewing remotely.
– Practice intentionally: do mock interviews with peers, mentors, or a coach. Time yourself and practice answering common behavioral and role-specific questions.

During the interview
– Lead with clarity: start answers with a one-sentence summary of your point, then support with detail. This helps busy interviewers follow your main idea before you dig into specifics.
– Show process for technical problems: talk through assumptions, ask clarifying questions, outline trade-offs and next steps. Interviewers value how you approach problems, not just the final answer.
– Keep stories measurable: quantify results whenever possible (percent improvements, time saved, revenue impact). Specifics make achievements believable and memorable.
– Use body language and vocal cues: maintain eye contact, sit upright, nod to show engagement, and vary tone to emphasize key points.

In virtual interviews, look at the camera when answering to simulate eye contact.
– Ask thoughtful questions: focus on team dynamics, success metrics for the role, onboarding expectations, and opportunities for growth.

Avoid questions that can be answered with basic research.
– Handle salary tactfully: if asked early, provide a researched range anchored to market rates and your total compensation needs. If possible, defer detailed negotiation until after an offer.

After the interview
– Send a timely follow-up: a brief thank-you message referencing a specific discussion point reinforces fit and keeps you top of mind. Aim to send within a day or two.
– Reflect and iterate: note what went well and what could improve.

Update your stories, practice areas, and technical approach after each interview.
– Close the loop: if you decide to withdraw or accept another offer, let other interviewers or recruiters know promptly and professionally.

Best practices for interviewers
– Standardize assessments: use scorecards and consistent questions to reduce bias and enable fair comparisons across candidates.
– Be transparent: share the interview agenda, expected timeline to decision, and who the candidate will meet.
– Create a welcoming environment: respect time, explain technical tasks before asking candidates to start, and allow time for questions.
– Focus on evidence: ask for concrete examples and probe for impact.

Encourage candidates to walk through trade-offs rather than only seeking the “right” answer.
– Commit to timely feedback and updates: candidates appreciate clear communication about next steps, even if the news is negative.

A thoughtful interview process creates better hires and a stronger employer brand. Whether you’re interviewing for a role or hiring one, preparation, clear communication, and respect make the difference between a missed opportunity and a great match.
